The Truth About Change

If there’s one thing we can count on in our lives, it’s that change is inevitable and we had better learn to get used to it.

Change is normal, even routine for many of us. Maybe we get a new different batch of clients that we have to work with every couple of months. Maybe our school runs on a quarterly system so it seems like we’re always finishing up one class and immediately starting another. Maybe your family has moved around a lot in the last couple of years, and you find yourself struggling to make new friends with all the changes. Or maybe you’re just trying to keep up with your kids, who grow and change every day.

Change is recurring and persistent, and we know it will always happen. It’s something we can actually rely on. So why do we resist change so much and have such a hard time adapting to it?

Because change is hard. It’s unfamiliar. It always holds an inherent risk of the unknown, and that can be, well, unsettling.

We also feel a loss of control when change happens. We had a routine down pat, and now we have to learn something new to deal with the change that renders our past routine useless. It often makes us question our competence as a result, and makes us wonder, “Can I really do this?” We worry that we won’t be able to adjust, and that we simply won’t be able to handle what’s different.

Humans are creatures of habit, and change challenges that. However, humans may very well be the most adaptable, resilient species to walk the Earth, and with that comes the amazing ability to not only survive any number of challenges thrown at us, but also thrive.

Our success as a species can be attributed to our adaptability. So even when you’re presented with the most difficult of challenges, remember that you hold a lot more power and resilience than you may think.

However, it doesn’t hurt to have a little extra help when it comes to coping with change. So the next time the waves of change hit you hard and fast, find comfort in these 25 coping with change quotes.
