All of us shower every day, or most days (hopefully). We spend a lot of time showering, but there are several things we could be doing differently to really maximize our time in the shower, and emerge looking even more goddess-like.
Want to know how you can get the most out of your shower? Try these 9 tips next time for the perfect shower routine.
1. Brush your hair before you step in. If you’re planning on washing your hair, give it a good brush through before stepping in the shower. This will help to keep it from getting too tangled as you shower, as well as prevent breakage for when you brush your hair afterwards.
2. Dry brush before you turn on the water. There’s a reason for all the hype about dry brushing – it works! While dry brushing is great for making your skin glow, the real benefit comes from improving circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid. When you brush, you actually flush out the toxins surrounding your cells. So before you turn on the water, use a dry brush and work from your feet upwards in the direction of your heart.
3. Shampoo at the roots. Most people concentrate on shampooing throughout the length of their hair, but you actually just need to focus on the roots and the nape of your neck. Oil and dirt collects primarily in these two spots.
4. Deep condition your hair. Once or twice a week, use a deep conditioner on your hair. The heat and steam from the shower will allow the treatment to more effectively soak into the strands. My favorite deep conditioner right now is It’s a 10 Miracle Deep Conditioner Plus Keratin. It gives your hair a glorious, silky shine and makes it super manageable when styling afterwards.
5. Use your facial mask. Multi-task and save time by using your facial mask while you shower. After you’ve washed off your face, apply your mask and let the extra heat and steam do the work. The steam will open up your pores and allow the mask to work more effectively.
6. Do a cold-water rinse at the end. Warm water opens up your hair cuticles, while cold water will seal it back up, which makes your hair extra shiny. Just before you turn off the water, turn the temperature to cold and rinse your hair for a few seconds.
7. Hold the razor. It takes a few minutes for your pores to open up and for the hair to soften. So by waiting to shave towards the end of your shower, you’ll get the closest shave, and also have less of a chance of developing ingrown hairs.
8. Moisturize immediately after your shower. Before your skin is even completely dry, apply oil or lotion all over right after you shower. This will lock the water into your skin and keep it moisturized longer. Not only will your skin stay glowing, but it will allow the moisturizer and any special ingredients in it to work more effectively. My favorite body oil is by Neutrogena. It smells light and clean, and leaves your skin feeling ultra soft.
9. Pop on those eye strips, too. After the steam has opened up the pores on your face, your skin is better able to absorb any treatments, making it the ideal time to apply anti-aging eye strips. My go-to is La Pure Luxury Collagen Eye Mask.
