Do you ever feel like your constantly being pulled in every direction? That you’re always putting off what matters most to you?

It often seems like our lives are merely a juggling contest, a contest where we struggle to keep up with the demands that only seem to keep growing in number, no matter how fast we move or how hard we work. We run and run from dawn until dusk, and yet it seems we just can’t keep up with everything that begs for our attention.

It’s easy to feel lost and unfulfilled when this is how we live our lives every day.

So how can we begin to slow things down and start to appreciate what matters most in our lives? How do we begin to live our lives to the fullest? Here are a few, straightforward ways.

5 Ways to Live Your Life to the Fullest

1. More face time, less media. Our lives are completely inundated with exposure to media. Whether it’s checking our social media first thing in the morning, working on our laptops all day, watching our favorite shows every night, or periodically checking our newsfeeds throughout the day, the exposure is constant. Media has saturated nearly every aspect of our lives, distracting us from what’s truly important. Think about it, when you spend time with your kids, your partner, or your friends, how often are you checking social media or your work email? Do you find yourself lazily scrolling through your Facebook newsfeed as you tune into the conversation periodically? Being constantly engaged with media comes with a cost. It compromises our relationships, and ultimately prevents us from living in the moment with those we truly care about. Make a sincere effort to reduce your media consumption, and to be more engaged with those around you.

2. Say “No” to all the extras. Do you find yourself saying “Yes” to nearly every activity that comes up without even thinking it through? So much of our lives consist of running from place to place that we forget to slow things down. We get caught up in the whirlwind between our professional and personal lives, and never feel truly rested or present.  This means that we may forget to make the most of those little moments that are actually far more significant than we may realize. Simplify your life, and start saying “No” to any unnecessary activities or added responsibilities. While this may be difficult to do at first, realize that other people’s problems aren’t yours to solve, and you have your own life to live. That means taking the time to immerse yourself in what you actually want to do, to make the most of those little moments, and to finally live your life to the fullest.

3. But say “Yes” to what you love. Learning to say “No” to all the unnecessary activities in your life means you can finally start saying “Yes” to what you truly love doing. Whether it’s working out more, going on long hikes, trying out new recipes, spending more time with your loved ones, or finally planning that weekend getaway with your partner, use your time to start doing what makes you happy.

4. Stay true to you, even if it means going against the grain. Often we may find ourselves living our lives in accordance with others’ beliefs and values, rather than our own. We may deny how we truly feel about something to go with the popular opinion, or to meet others’ expectations of ourselves. This means that we may be living in ways that are inauthentic, and not true to ourselves. Going against the grain isn’t always easy, but living a life that you know doesn’t reflect what you believe is even harder. Reflect on your values and beliefs. Are you sticking by them in your choices? Do they reflect how you’re living your day to day life? Make a sincere effort to be more authentic to yourself. It’s when we can stay authentic and true to ourselves that we can finally begin to live our lives to the fullest.

5. See every morning as a fresh start. It’s all too easy to become enmeshed in the daily grind, and to see life as a continuous, repetitive cycle that begins every morning when we wake up. Try tweaking your perspective on this, though. Is every day just another day? Or is it an opportunity to start anew? Reflect on what you want to get out of today every morning when you wake up. Every day is a chance to have a fresh start, to learn something new, and to live your life to the fullest.
