There’s no denying that exercising in the winter just doesn’t come as easily as working out in the summer. And with the temptation of comfort foods and Netflix always beckoning to us when the weather outside is dreadful, finding the motivation to exercise may seem impossible.

While our natural inclination in the winter is to stay indoors and go into hibernation, doing so only compromises our health and well-being. In fact, there are several health benefits associated with winter workouts.

Luckily, there are a few ways you can maintain your fitness during the colder months, while also beating the winter blues. Use these 3 tips to keep exercising this winter.

How to Keep Exercising Even When It’s Unbearably Cold

1. Invest in the right clothing. Probably the worst part of working out in the winter is that it’s just too dang cold. When the temperature drops, the last thing that sounds fun is to go outside and exercise. Change that by making sure you have the proper gear for braving the elements. Plus, purchasing new fitness gear tends to make us more excited about actually using it.

2. Turn your happy hour with a pal into an exercise date. One of the best ways to stay fit while also beating the winter blues is to exercise with a friend. Instead of your usual happy hour date with friends, try getting them together over a fitness class, like spin or yoga. Or if the weather isn’t too miserable, go on a walking date.

3. Set goals. If you really want to stay in shape this winter, having a sense of accountability is a must. This winter season, take some time to envision what your goals are when it comes to your fitness. Is your goal to improve your mile time? To gain more flexibility? Write these goals down and hold yourself accountable. Then, when you reach your goal, be sure to reward yourself with something that will inspire you to continue on your fitness journey. Maybe you’ve been eying a new pair of running shoes. Or maybe you’ve been wanting to invest in a bosu ball. Whatever you choose, make sure your reward is one that inspires you to be your healthiest.
